BIG SPRING - Big Spring High School was busy Friday night as participants gathered to walk and run to beat cancer. They had close to 500 people register and all joined for a good cause.

"There was a lot of joy, there was a lot of hope, a lot of love. It was the ending to a great spirit week. We started with paint the town purple, where a lot of business in town painted or decorated their business purple. It really lifted the spirits ready for relay this week," Negron said.

Manny Negron is on the committee to organize the event and he said the community of Big Spring has now been doing this for two decades.

"This was our 20th anniversary and it's here at the high school until we grow out of it," Negron said.

Though Big Spring High School is empty Sunday, Friday's event included teams from both Howard and Glasscock County, who walked the track from 6 p.m. until midnight.

"We have a great representation that comes from Glasscock County. The Glasscock County 4-H club from Garden City have done an amazing job in raising money for this event. They have been with us for many years. They are a great group of kids with their sponsors and they have a lot of fun out here,"  Negron said.

All participants helped to raise money which was almost $147,000, just shy of their goal which was $150,000.

Negron hopes the goal will be matched sometime next month.

"We're hoping by the middle of July. August is the end of the fiscal year for Relay for Life. We're hoping to get the money before," Negron said.
