MIDLAND COUNTY- It was around 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning when the Midland County Sheriff's Office responded to a caliche road near the intersection of County Road 1205 and County Road 135. That's when they found 19-year-old Haley Kemp dead.
"I'm kind of in shock. I just don't want to believe this. I just can't sleep at night. I just keep thinking that this is just a nightmare," Heather Kemp, Haley Kemp's cousin, said.
On Monday morning, NewsWest 9 spoke with several members of Haley's family who are all mourning the loss of their loved one. Officials said Haley's body was found fully clothed with personal items, including her identification, lying next to her.
"Just to think that I won't be able to see her again and I won't be able to grow up with her and see her have a family of her own. It's just really heartbreaking for us," Heather said.
Right now, the case is being investigated as a suspicious death. However, her mother, who spoke with NewsWest 9 off camera, said she believes Haley died from a drug overdose. Her mother went on to say Haley was a good person who just got involved with the wrong crowd. Back in high school, she was involved in the National Honor Society and band. Her mother also told NewsWest 9, Haley had been in and out of rehab and struggling with bipolar disorder. But it seems like everyone can agree that Haley was a great person.
"She was just a really amazing person and everyone would have been lucky to have known her," Heather said.
We're also told that Haley did a lot of volunteer work for the Children's Advocacy Center. Their program director tells NewsWest 9 that they will be naming the area where they keep their stuffed animals after her.
