The program for our high school graduations will be changing this year – references to Invocation and Benediction will now say Opening and Closing. A week ago, our District received a call from Americans United for the Separation of Church & State voicing concerns about the way we set up our graduation ceremonies and we realized our practices did not meet our school board policy.
The references to Invocation and Benediction give the impression the school or the school district are endorsing religion, which is not allowed. Those references will be changed and student speakers will be randomly drawn, according to policy FNA (Local) page 3 of 4, to give the Opening and Closing remarks at graduation.
Finally, the practice of having the senior class vote on whether or not to have prayer during the ceremony will be dropped because those types of elections in regard to prayer at graduation are not permissible.
