ODESSA - An Odessa woman was brutally attacked in an alley early Thursday morning. She was beaten so badly, she ended up in the hospital. Police said the woman's screams may have saved her but that attacker is on the run.

Residents in the 1600 block of Hancock Avenue in Odessa said it's normally a quiet neighborhood but that changed Thursday morning.

"It's scary," a neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, said. "She could've got killed."

A 19-year-old woman was rushed to Medical Center Hospital after police said she was brutally attacked.

"The suspect punched her, hit her head, beat her head to the ground," Cpl. Steve LeSueur with Odessa Police, said. "It caused some pretty serious head injuries as well as all over the rest of her body."

Police said the victim got up around 3:45 a.m. to let her dog outside. They were in the front yard when the dog ran to the alley so the woman ran after it.

"While she was in a nearby alley, an unknown male approached her," LeSueur said.

The victim told police that's when the man threw her down and slammed her head in the ground. At one point, she blacked out. According to the police report, the suspect used his hands, feet and even his teeth as weapons against the woman.

"Her boyfriend woke up and heard a female screaming and didn't even realize it was his girlfriend," LeSueur said.

The victim's boyfriend ran outside toward the screams and saw a man pinning the woman down and beating her. The attacker fled as soon as he realized he wasn't alone.

A neighbor who didn't want to be identified said the attack is a wake up call.

"That's scary because nothing like that's ever happened," the neighbor said. "So many people here nowadays and you think why was he there in the first beginning. If I was her, I'd go get me a firearm."

NewsWest 9 did get in touch with the victim's boyfriend. He didn't want to go on camera but he said his girlfriend is out of the hospital and recovering at home.
