NEAR CARLSBAD, N.M. – Two people are dead following a two vehicle accident near Carlsbad.
The accident happened at the intersection of State Road 200 and Eddy County Road 206, just north of Carlsbad on Monday afternoon.
New Mexico State Police tells NewsWest 9, a 1994 Kenworth Commerical Vehicle was traveling eastbound on State 200 Road approaching the intersection when a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe stopped at the intersection.
Then for an unknown reason, The Tahoe failed to yield the right of way to the Kenworth vehicle.
The Tahoe attempted to cross State Road 200 and was t-boned by the Kenworth vehicle.
The driver of the Tahoe, 49-year-old Marta Rico, from Loving, New Mexico, and three year old Cadence Lopez were pronounced dead. Another passenger, one year old Devin Lopez was airlifted to the hospital. Her condition is unknown.
According to police, the contributing factors in the crash have been identified as driver inattention on Rico’s part and possibly Cadence not being restrained properly.
We’re told alcohol was not a contributing factor in the accident.
