Amarillo, TX - Area residents packed the Amarillo Animal Control Board meeting Monday evening to express their concerns about what they've read on social media about questionable euthanization practices.

Both the director, Mike McGee and assistant director, Shannon Barlow are reportedly on paid administrative leave. Scott McDonald has been appointed interim director at this time.

Residents say they concerned with how these animals may be suffering. During the meeting it was mentioned by an animal control officer that they do not have scales inside the facility, which called into question for at least one resident how the dogs or cats could be humanely euthanized.

"It's very frustrating to me that Amarillo, Texas has such a crazy high euthanization rate. And that starts with the citizens. I mean that starts with people getting their animals sterilized. And that's not something a lot of people here in Amarillo are worried about or address," said concerned resident Sandy Whitney.

For now acting director Scott McDonald will continue to monitor euthanizations at the shelter. He did mention in his report to the board that area veterinarians are assisting in the euthanizations.

The next scheduled board meeting is in May, and we will continue to follow and report on any developments as they take place.
