MIDLAND – One Midland mother was sentenced to jail time after pleading guilty on Monday to a charge of injury to a child for recklessly causing serious bodily injury.
Midland County District Attorney Teresa Clingman tells NewsWest 9, 26-year-old Gecenia Elizabeth Escobar was sentenced to two years in prison.
We’re told it took the jury a little over two hours to return the judgment on sentencing.
This all started back in November of 2011 when Escobar brought her son to the emergency room after he had grown sick over a period of a few days.
The boy was immediately taken to Lubbock for emergency surgery where doctors discovered the boy had a ruptured bladder.
When officials first confronted Escobar about the injuries to her son, she said that he hurt himself by falling on a living room table.
Officials say after nearly two months of denials, Escobar admitted that she inadvertently slipped and hit or fell on the boy with her knee as she tried to hold him down and strike him with a belt while on an emotional phone call with the boy’s father.
We’re told the child has fully recovered from his injuries and is currently in the custody of the boy’s grandmother.
