ODESSA- John Hughes, a former ECISD substitute teacher, is now being investigated by federal agents and it's all thanks to social media.
According to official documents, the investigation into Hughes first started in Michigan on April 30, 2013, when the mother of a 15-year-old girl found sexual images and inappropriate text conversations on her daughters iPod.
The documents state that the young girl received a package in the mail and the return address was labeled "John R Hughes" from Odessa, Texas. Inside that delivery was a wallet made out of duct tape and $149. The 15-year-old girl claims she was chatting with Hughes through different sites like Skype and an app called Text Plus.
According to court documents, the girl said Hughes would ask her to send him nude pictures of herself and she would so Hughes would still talk to her. She also identified a picture of a penis and claimed it was sent to her from Hughes. On March 19 back in Odessa, Hughes admitted to sending the young girl the wallet full of cash. He also admitted to knowing the girl was 15 when he sent her inappropriate pictures and when he received nude pictures from her.
Right now, Hughes is behind bars and a bond hearing is set for Tuesday. ECISD was notified and they immediately removed Hughes from the list of available substitute teachers.
"That kind of behavior or those kind of actions are completely inappropriate. Our teachers, our staff members are all supposed to be examples for children and doing the right thing. We pride ourselves on being a safe environment for our kids to be in and that's obviously not," Mike Adkins with ECISD, said.
