LEA COUNTY, N.M. - A Hobbs man is dead following an afternoon accident on Wednesday in Lea County.

New Mexico State Police tell NewsWest 9, they were called out to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. Highway 62/180 and New Mexico State Road 483.

An initial investigation determined that a 2007 International semi-truck was traveling eastbound on Highway 62/180 while a 1989 GMC SUV was traveling westbound.

Officials say when the vehicles approached the intersection with State Road 483, the semi-truck attempted to turn northbound and the driver of the truck didn't see the GMC. The GMC collided with the right side of the trailer that the semi was hauling.

The driver of the GMC, 24-year-old Daniel Jones, died on the scene. The driver of the semi, 33-year-old Stoney Melton, was not injured in the accident.

Officials say alcohol and seatbelts were not contributing factors in the accident.
