ECTOR COUNTY - The Ector County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in the area.
Officials tell NewsWest 9, a male caller is implying that they are associated with the Ector County Sheriff’s Office and is asking for a specific person advising that person had missed a summons for court duty.
When the victim called back, the male subject answered the phone and identified himself as a Sergeant with the Sheriff’s Office.
The man told the victim that she needed to obtain a “voucher” for payment for a warrant and also one for failing to appear.
The suspect told the woman that she couldn’t pay in cash, check or money order. He said that is must be a “Green Dot Money Pack” and could be purchased at Stripes. He also told the woman to stay on the phone because if she hung up, he would send an officer to arrest her.
The Ector County Sheriff’s Office tells NewsWest 9 that they don’t do business this way. They do not collect fines for warrants nor do they make phone calls advising of outstanding warrants or jury summons.
Anyone receiving a call of this nature is asked not to give out any information, write down the number of the caller and to contact the Ector County Sheriff’s Office at (432) 335-3050.
