Hockey isn't exactly synonymous with west Texas. However, that doesn't mean this area can't produce players. Jakob Nunez fell in love with the game when he watched the Odessa Jackalopes when he was just a kid. Eventually, he began to play for the Odessa youth hockey league where he excelled above the competition. Jakob worked his way from the midget level to mite, playing all over the continent. At age 17, former Jackalopes assistant coach Donnie Margettie, who was familiar with Jakob from the youth league, asked him to come to the Jackalopes camp in the summer of 2013. Jakob attended, made the team, and became the first Odessa native to play for the Jackalopes. He finally worked his way into the lineup in late December and played well. For now, Jakob is juggling his senior year at OHS, baseball, and the Jackalopes. As of now, he intends to continue with the Jackalopes next year, and see where his hockey career goes.
