AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas Secretary of State has referred three complaints against Democratic group Battleground Texas for possible prosecution as violations of a state election law.
Attorney General Greg Abbott's office recused itself from handling the case and passed the allegations on to the district attorney in Bexar County, where the violations allegedly took place. The DA will decide if there is sufficient evidence for a criminal prosecution.
A spokesman for the Democratic group said he would issue a statement later Friday.
Abbott is running for governor against Democrat Wendy Davis, whom Battleground Texas is helping with voter registration and mobilization.
A conservative activist group produced a video that purports to show a Battleground organizer talking about potentially illegally transcribing phone numbers off of voter registration cards.
