CARLSBAD, N.M. - The U.S. Department of Energy appointed a team to investigate the detection of radiation in and near the nuclear storage plant in Carlsbad.

That's after an underground monitor at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant detected airborne radiation late Friday night.

An independent monitor center found radioactive isotopes in an air sensor a half mile away.

The carlsbad environmental monitoring and research center says the detected levels are the highest ever detected at or around the site, but they were also far below those deemed unsafe by the environmental protection agency.

The Wipp Plant in Carlsbad is the nation's only underground nuclear waste repository.
