Home builder introduces the "barndominium" to Amarillo area

AMARILLO, TX - There is a unique new housing option popping up in the Amarillo area, with a different kind of curb appeal.

A "barndominium" is basically a home built inside a metal barn. Though that may sound primitive, the man building the homes says he expects them to become quite popular in the panhandle.

Inside it looks like something straight off HGTV, but from the outside, you would have no idea. The designer touches inside Jadon Homes owner Andy Lemon's barn home doesn't look like a typical barn, and from the quiet inside the home you can't hear the raging winds pounding on the metal walls outside.

Lemons has built two "barndominiums" in Randall County so far, and one in Childress. Lemons, his wife and three children live in one on Arnot Road in Randall County, and the another next door is still under construction. "In a nutshell it's just like building a regular stick-frame house, just with in the confinements of a metal building structure," Lemons said.

Since the homes are technically barns, they can't be built in a regular subdivision within city limits. But Lemons says he plans to develop several on land in-between Amarillo and Bushland. The feedback on the structures, Lemons says, has been positive, even from those who cringed at first, like his wife. "When I brought up the idea of building a barn to live in, she nixed that idea pretty quick," he said.

"But now she doesn't want to move!" It's not just the sleek design that's appealing. Many insurance companies give discounts for metal roofs. "On the outside you're maintenance free," Lemons said.

Plus, he says the foam insulation adds to the structure of the home while keeping electricity cost down. "It also helps sound proofing for the great Texas Panhandle wind, and hail that we get out here," Lemons said.

Could the homes be the next big thing in the Panhandle? Lemons says... Maybe. "Really to get the full effect you need to come out and see the outside and the inside to really appreciate what it is," he said.

The two barn homes featured in this story are valued in the $300,000 range but Lemons says he plans to build some smaller, more affordable homes as well.
