PEARLAND, TEXAS - A twin-engine airplane has crashed south of Houston after being diverted from a nearby airport because of poor visibility.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford said Wednesday the Beechcraft King Air went down about 9 a.m. near Pearland Regional Airport.

He says the aircraft appears to have departed earlier from Austin en route to Galveston Scholes Airport. The pilot was diverted to Pearland due to low visibility in the Galveston area, which was shrouded in fog Wednesday morning.

Lunsford says the pilot attempted to land once in Pearland before making another pass.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Sampa says the plane burst into flames after striking the ground nose-first.
