Kids Cafe facility breaks ground

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - The High Plains Food Bank is expanding to better reach the high plains.

It is all in an effort to combat the growing number of area children at risk of hunger. Today The High Plains Food Bank broke ground on a new building that will allow them to grow their Kids Cafe program into more schools and communities throughout the panhandle.

The facility will be located Northeast of the High Plains Food Bank warehouse in Amarillo. The executive director, Zack Wilson, says the new kitchen will increase the amount of meals provided for kids by four to five times. "This is important because these are kids that might not receive something, or are relying on their own resources and so here we provide them with meals and let them just be kids. This is just another way to help make sure we produce happy healthy children"

Kids Cafe is an after school program that serves hot meals to kids who may not get a third meal when they go home. Not only do they provide food, but they also educate children about food nutrition. "There is that educational impact factor, that we want to say the importance of nutrition and the importance of a healthy and well balanced diet. Especially in kids, they are growing, and they need that education."

The food bank says this facility is important because food insecurities impact us all in the panhandle. "We can make strides to combat childhood obesity, by inserting education and meals now or we can pay it further on down the road with higher medical costs and the cost that come with diabetes and obesity related issues. So it is a pay it forward thing that affects us all and that is why it is so important."

The building's new kitchen should be up and running in August, in time for the start of the new school year.
