PECOS - So far, all of the City Council members seem to be in favor of banning texting and driving. At Thursday night's meeting, they took a look at the ordinance. Ordinance 14-01-01 is relating to the use of wireless communication devices for texting while operating a motor vehicle.

The ordinance will require two readings and council majority before it will be implemented. News West 9 talked with Council Member, Field Yow, before the meeting to understand the reason for Pecos to pass this ordinance.

"It's a preventative measure. It's been proven that texting and driving, reading your cell phone and driving is more dangerous than driving drunk," Yow said.

The council and the community didn't have any objections with the first reading of the ordinance. But NewsWest 9 was curious to know what happens if you happen to get caught texting behind the wheel.

"I think it will probably end up being a traffic ticket. It's not going to be something that's major, the goal behind this is a preventative measure," Yow said.

More about the fines will be discussed during the second reading at a future council meeting but the notion that it will be between $100 to $200 was brought up.

Yow is hoping after the second reading, the ordinance will be implemented right away.

"That's something we'll discuss tonight (Thursday), hopefully we'll make it effective immediately," Yow said

Yow summed it up perfectly.

"To pick up your phone, look down and not look at the road, that's dangerous. It's just something we want to do to protect the community. Everyone is going to win if we get this thing passed," Yow said.
