Assistance for those without heat

AMARILLO, TX - Single digit temperatures will continue across the Panhandle Wednesday night into Thursday morning, and that can be dangerous if you don't take care.

Right now there's no reason anyone should be left out in the cold in Amarillo because there are services available for just about everyone. With temperatures in the single digits and even colder wind chills, sleeping outside or without heat is not an option.

Both Faith City Mission and the Salvation Army shelters in downtown Amarillo will keep their doors open to all throughout the night, except for registered sex offenders. For those worried about how long their heat will stay on due to late utility bills, no need to worry.

Atmos Energy will not and can not turn off any customer's power when temperatures drop below 40 degrees in Amarillo,or 32 degrees anywhere else in the Panhandle. The energy company has a program to help those who need help paying their bills, and you can donate to that effort by checking the voluntary donation box on your Atmos Energy bill. That money goes to Panhandle Community Services to be distributed to those in need.

The non-profit says they've had an influx of callers needing help in this latest cold snap. To apply for an appointment to determine whether you are eligible for that assistance, you can call their new automated hotline at 1-855-459-3716, or apply online.

The agency is booked with appointments until next Thursday, so if you need help, you best call soon. Of course if you don't have to be outside this weather, stay in. But officials advise that if you do go out, bundle up, make sure your phone is charged and your car is equipped with blankets.
