Drought aid available for New Mexico farmers and ranchers

Posted: Updated:

Federal emergency loans will now be available for farmers and ranchers in 27 drought stricken New Mexico counties, including Curry and Quay.

The announcement came Wednesday by New Mexico's congressional delegation.

The Farm Service Agency will offer emergency loans up to $500,00 to restore or replace essential property and pay for part of production costs associated with losses due to the drought.

Certain debts can also be refinanced with loan money as well as used for essential living expenses. Farmers and ranchers must apply for the federal loans.

Nearly every square mile in New Mexico is under some form of dry conditions according to current drought maps.
