HOWARD COUNTY - A couple of fires in Big Spring kept Howard County Volunteer Firefighters busy on Sunday.

The first fire took place around 4:30 p.m. at a house in the 5900 block of North County Road 35.

Officials say the fire sparked up because of several shorts in the heating unit.

The house was severely damaged but it wasn't a total loss.

While firefighters were wrapping things up at the house, they got a call about a grass fire on North County Road 29.

According to Fire Chief Tommy Sullivan, the fire was a controlled burn.

The property owners were not cited for incident but they were reminded that it's illegal to start a controlled burn at night.
