Historical Texas cross vandalized on Christmas

Posted: Updated:

A historic cross in south Texas has been vandalized, and on Christmas eve, no less.

The wooden cross was cut down and the crucified Jesus cut into pieces. The cross that was built more than a century ago known as La Santa Cruz, or the Holy Cross is located on top of a hill above U.S. Highway 83 in Rio Grande City.

Local police are still searching for the vandals. Damage to the monument is estimated to be around $2,000.

A temporary wooden cross was put up Thursday in it's place by volunteers. The damage was reported on Christmas morning to the Starr County Sheriff's Office.

The Texas State Historical Association says this cross was put up back in 1894 to commemorate the end of a drought.

The cross may have meaning again to people in the state that has been suffering through yet again another drought.
