Number of volunteer bell ringers declines because of weather

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - The cold weather is causing problems for Amarillo's Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army said the below freezing temperatures are scaring away volunteer bell ringers. Many are canceling on them because they don't want to stand out in the cold.

Having volunteer bell ringers at key shopping locations right before Christmas is crucial for the organization's fundraising, and less volunteers means less money.

"We kind of have to make up the ground from the bell ringers that can't be out there on the weekend," said Salvation Army spokesperson Catherine Meck. "We have to pay bell ringers to be out there. So it does kind of cut into some of our fundraising goals, but at the same time we have to make up that ground."

To make up that ground, the Salvation Army is now asking area businesses and churches to take some of their extra donation buckets and stuff them as full as they can.

They say they are below their holiday fundraising goal, so any extra donations will help.
