Salvation Army puts up angel tree for the elderly

Posted: Updated:

AMARILLO, TX - We've all heard of the Salvation Army's angel tree that guarantees less fortunate kids have a gift to open on Christmas morning, but now the organization is catering to a new demographic: the elderly.

A new tree set up on the second floor of the JC Penney's at Westgate Mall has angels from various nursing homes all over Amarillo.

The tree is sponsored Reagor Dykes Mitsubishi and JC Penney's. "It gives people a way to connect with a different population base that people might want to remember during the holiday season," Salvation Army Corps Officer, Major Harvey Johnson said.

"Everybody likes a gift, no matter if it's a pair of socks or candy and whether you're 90 or 2 months old," General Manager of Reagor Dykes Mitsubishi, Paul Chenoweth said.

Most of the tags include the first name, age, and a few needs of the elderly angel. There are over 100 tags on the tree.
