Area sheriff arrested amid Texas Ranger investigation

Posted: Updated:

WELLINGTON - An area sheriff arrested amid an investigation by the Texas Rangers will remain on duty for the foreseeable future.

Collingsworth County Sheriff Jerry Allen faces two charges both connected with him hiring his step-daughter in the sheriff's office.

The indictments are the result of an on-going Texas Rangers investigation. Allen was arrested Monday by Childress County Sheriff Mike Pigg on one count of abuse of official capacity and one count of official misconduct. He was booked into the Childress County jail, and bonded out not an hour later.

The District Attorney for Collingsworth County, Luke Inman, recused himself from the case so it's now being handled out of Wilbarger County by District Attorney Staley Heatly.

Allen could be forced to pay up to $4,000 in fines and spend up to a year in jail if convicted on the abuse of official capacity charge, which is a class C misdemeanor. The official misdemeanor charge is a special misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000.

Several Wellington citizens told NewsChannel 10 they were confused at why the Texas Rangers would be involved in a small town nepotism case.

Jail administrators would not say whether Allen's step-daughter, Camielle Creamer, still works for the sheriff's department, but they did say Allen was back on the job Tuesday.

Allen could not be reached for comment.
