MIDLAND - A fight between friends this weekend in Midland left one man dead and another behind bars. The alleged shooter has been charged with murder and neighbors are shocked this happened.

20-year-old Cameron Massey and 20-year-old Pete Ballez Jr. were friends, according to neighbors.

"It's a tragedy, a tragedy what happened," one neighbor said.

Public Information Officer, Sara Higgins, told NewsWest 9 at the scene on Sunday, that a fight broke out between Ballez and Massey inside a home in the 4300 block of Parkdale.

The fight moved to the front yard, where according to the affidavit, Ballez admitted to shooting Massey once with a 12 gauge shotgun. Massey was pronounced dead at the scene and Ballez arrested.

JoAnn San Miguel, a neighbor, was outside when the commotion happened.

"The cops came, they surrounded the place. They pulled out their shotguns, cause one of the kids was walking up and down the street in shock," she said.

San Miguel has lived on the block for years and said she saw Ballez grow up.

"It's just terrible, I mean, they're kids. There has to be some kind of accountability," she said.

One neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, knew both Massey and Ballez. She said they were friends and she felt double the loss.

"I love them both so much. Those were my kids. I feel like I lost two of them," she said.

And her heart goes out to the Massey family.

"Cameron was a really good kid. His mother's got to be dying inside," she said.

Ballez has been charged with murder. According to the Midland County jail log, Ballez is still behind bars. The investigation is ongoing.
