MARTIN COUNTY - Three people are behind bars in Martin County after leading Sheriff John Woodward on a chase with speeds reaching 100 miles per hour. Sheriff Woodward believes these three are behind the string of burglaries around the county.

"Since early October of this year, we've had a lot of burglaries and thefts. We believe a lot of the evidence ties these cases together," he said.

Some of the things that turned up missing on several oil leases around the county include tools, chains and fuel.

"Diesel is being stolen out of fuel tanks, out of rigs," Sheriff Woodward told NewsWest 9.

After the chase, it seems like the rash of criminal activity could come to a halt. Sheriff Woodward told NewsWest 9 he received a call about a burglary in progress on an oil lease. He said he went out to the call and tried to pull the suspects over and that's when the chase ensued.

The alleged bandits lead the sheriff through dirt roads and ranches, before they lost a wheel. Then two men jumped out of the car and tried to run from the sheriff. The woman stayed inside the vehicle. Sheriff Woodward got the two men to stop and arrested all three suspects.

Before Tuesday's foiled robbery, three places were robbed on Monday in the county.

"We had copper stolen, 500 pounds. We had an electric company hit; fuel and tools," he said.

Sheriff Woodward believes the recent robberies are the handy work of the three individuals.

"It's the same MO on a lot of these thefts. The same style, same tracks, same types," he told NewsWest 9.

At this time, the three arrested are all being charged with evading arrest and engaging in organized criminal activity. Sheriff Woodward told NewsWest 9 more charges could follow.
