ODESSA- The effects of Typhoon Hiayan have been devastating for the Philippines. Right now, the death toll is up to 10,000 and is being considered one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded. Although our community is thousands of miles away, it's still hitting close to home for some.

"Yes, I have a lot of family there. I go home alot especially now. This year, I was there twice," Fundraiser Organizer, Gloria Apolinario, said.

"Well we are worried. We are hoping that they are not one of those people who are dead," Fundraiser Organizer, Susana Hines, said.

Now some west Texans are coming together by forming a fundraiser and they're asking for your help.

"I would try to raise $100,000 through this fundraiser so please everybody, help me, that would be awesome," Apolinario said.

The fundraiser will start this Thursday at Susie's Asian Grocery store in Odessa, other locations throughout town will be accepting donations as well. (For more details on how you can help click here.)
"I think that this community in doing this will not only be reaching out to the people there in the Philippines, but also supporting the people here who are concerned about their loved ones, their family who they haven't heard from," Gene Collins, National Director of Partner Services with the American Red Cross, said.

The Filipino community is asking for everyone's help in hopes West Texans can provide some relief to a country that is in desperate need.

"We have to do something for our brothers and sisters," Hines said.
