Amarillo City logo creates controversy

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo's new city logo is causing some people to look twice.

The logo was unveiled on Saturday, November 9th,  but it didn't take long for people to notice how similar it looked to the logo of EMAAR, a real estate company in Dubai.

Double U Marketing was originally working with the City during it's rebranding process, but owner Wendi Swope, says they have nothing to do with the City's new logo.

"Because our name was originally associated with this project and we did win the bid, there is some misinformation out there today regarding our involvements," Swope said. "We presented several pieces of original art but they decided to go in a different direction," she told us.

At Saturday's reveal, the image that was chosen, was designed and picked internally, by City Officials.

"It was brought to our attention after revealing the logo to the public that it is indeed very similar to anther logo that is overseas," said City Spokeswomen Sonja Gross.

A statement released by the city says "two City departments researched the artwork to avoid duplication with any similar mark and at the time did not find any similarities."

But all it takes is a quick reverse image search online, and the almost identical logo appears.

'It's just kinda amazing. It's just one of those fluke accidents that happened and it couldn't be foreseen and we are just dealing with the aftermath of it," Gross said.

City officials say they have contacted the company in Dubai and are trying to deal with this issue.
