West Nile Cases Reported in the Basin

PERMIAN BASIN - Cases of the West Nile Virus are popping up in the Basin.

Five cases have been confirmed by Midland Health and Senior Services, who are also investigating two new cases of the virus.

They say three of the confirmed cases were treated at Midland Memorial and the other two were at Odessa hospitals.

It is not known where the patients were from at this time.

Officials have several tips to keep you from getting bitten by mosquitoes which is how West Nile spreads:

  • Be sure to get rid of any standing water.
  • Use insect repellent containing Deet when you go outside.
  • Keep in mind that mosquitoes are the most active around sunrise and sunset.
  • Be sure to protect your pets because they can also catch the disease.
