Former Swisher County Sheriff Emmett Benavidez was booked into the Randall County jail on a charge of official oppression.

The charge stems from a federal lawsuit accusing Sheriff Benavidez of sexual abuse and exploitation of two women under his supervision.

Sheriff Benavidez resigned in 2011 following confirmed allegations of sexual misconduct.

Benavidez was released from jail Tuesday afternoon after paying a $1,500 bail.
