ANDREWS- It has only been open for 24 hours but Andrews Police have already given out over 70 tickets to drivers and it's all for violating the new truck reliever route.
"We are trying to be reasonable but on the other hand our position and our responsibility is to enforce the use of the reliever route," Andrews Police Chief, Bud Jones, said.
Jones says there were notices given and warning signs up. Still, some drivers say it's inconvenient.
"Well it's kind of a long route out of the way. Most guys just like to come through town the fastest and most efficient way," Truck Driver, Calvin Harris said.
But there are some exceptions to the new route.
"If they are delivering or picking up equipment or merchandise. For instance, trucks that go to the grocery stores, trucks that go to Family Dollar or Dollar General, those type of trucks, we've already seen that in town this (Wednesday) morning but they are delivering goods to the stores," Jones said.
The route has already helped the town.
"We have seen a marked reduction in trucks in the city and that in itself has alleviated a lot of traffic congestion," Jones said.
Police say they are going to keep enforcing the ordinance.
