A Sonora man is behind bars after he admitted that his oversized load hit three bridges along Interstate 20.

34-year-old Amalio Villanueva is facing felony charges of criminal mischief.

On Tuesday afternoon, a DPS trooper arrived at the scene of a crash at the Crane Avenue overpass.

That's where he found a flatbed trailer pulling an excavator that was three feet higher than the load height requirement which damaged the bottom of the overpass.

Villanueva also hit the north and southbound bridges at I-20 and Loop 338.

He confessed that he was the one who hit the overpasses saying that he knew better than to drive the tall load without a permit.

TXDOT officials estimated the damage to be about $240,000.

The Crane Avenue bridge is expected to remain closed for at least a year until it's fully repaired.
