Amarillo walks to raise awareness about rare brain condition

Posted: Updated:

A lesser-known disease received attention from the people of the Panhandle Saturday morning at the first Annual Chiari Walk Across America.

Chiari is a rare brain condition, a neurological disorder that can cause daily headaches and problems with the spine. Saturday, nearly 400 people participated in the Conquer Chiari Walk Across America at Thompson Park. It was the first in Amarillo of it's kind and something organizer's said is necessary to help bring attention and awareness about this disease.

"Awareness in the key because we need to medical community on top of the community to understand that when a child with Chiari says that they have a headache, it's not just an everyday headache that we have.," explained Katie Klaehn, an organizer for Saturday's walk. "It's a headache that really is debilitating and sometimes can take them out for the day."

The group set its first year fundraising goal at $8,000 dollars, but had already surpassed that prior to the walk Saturday morning.
