KERMIT- 50 years ago, the Kermit Yellow Jackets 1964 track team came home state champions and now they're back to get some long overdue recognition. It was a big reunion for the track team, almost every member made it back to the place they became champions so many years ago.

"It was a process of Internet and a lot of networking" Kermit ISD Superintendent, Bill Boyd, said.

But once they were together again, memories of that special year seem just like yesterday.

"We had an incredibly gifted team. It was wonderful and our coach was the greatest guy in the world," 1964 team member, Marty Mayor, said.

"Never a group of guys that were so dedicated as these guys were and I just grew up with them," 1964 head coach, Ken Fannon, said.

But even though their championship days are over- all the guys still remain close.

"These guys are blood. We really have stayed in touch," Mayor said.

"He would have loved to be here, to see his coach, to see his buddies," Jay Vigil, who is the son of one of the team members, said.

And the team says they feel humbled by the experience.

"Not something we deserve, it's not something we expected. We're just grateful" Mayor said.

On Friday night, as the Kermit Yellow Jackets celebrate their homecoming game, "They will receive state championship rings tonight at homecoming, 50 years after the fact," Boyd said.

"All of us were given a patch in the shape of the state of Texas that said state champions 1964 track so to get a ring is just an incredible honor," Mayor said.
