MIDLAND - 12 years ago, our nation changed forever in a cowardly act of terrorism.
But September 11th is a day where people stop to remember the brave acts of heroism that countered the evil.
On Wednesday, HEB did their part in the Ninth Annual Helping Heroes' Community Service Program.
Midland HEB volunteers delivered home-cooked meals to the local fire stations.
They also helped with various clean up and maintenance tasks like yard work, station cleaning and washing fire trucks.
Volunteers say it's the least they can do.
"We want to serve our community. Not only to our retail operation but we feel it's very important we give back to our community. So for us to be able to come out and recognize our firefighters for a few hours for one day a year, we feel it's the least we could do for what they do for us," a volunteer told NewsWest 9.
