MIDLAND - It was a somber day around the country as people marked the 12th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Hundreds of people reflected on the tragedy here in the Basin including the wife of Texas Congressman Ted Cruz.

It's the Tuesday morning in September 2001 that everyone can remember exactly where they were and what they were doing. For Heidi Cruz, she was at the White House.

"I remember gathering everyone together and running out of the building," Cruz said.

Cruz was the guest speaker at the Midland County Republican Women's Luncheon. The event marked the terrorist attacks and paid tribute to first responders, then and now.

Cruz shared her story in front of a full house. She was in a meeting at the White House complex room when they got word of the first attack.

"Secret Service said 'stay where you are.' There was very little understanding at that first instance of what was happening," Cruz said.

But not long after that, chaos erupted.

"When the second plane struck, there was running down the halls," Cruz said. "People were saying 'get out, run, don't walk.' Then of course, there were reports that a plane was headed to the D.C. area. We all made it to our homes as quickly as we could and I think there was a lot of prayer in those immediate first moments."

Cruz said she lost some friends in the attacks.

Now 12 years later, the images of that day still bring back painful memories. However, Cruz said it's a tragedy we can't forget and she has a message for future generations to remember.

"Freedom cannot be taken for granted," Cruz said.
