ODESSA - The City of Odessa is using social media as another way to communicate with residents. They just launched a Facebook page to let people know what's happening around town. They're also hoping it'll create a better image for the city.
In the age of social media, Odessa city officials said it just makes sense.
"Most people I know they have their phones, their smart phone, their tablets with them at all times," Andrea Goodson, Public Information Officer for the City of Odessa, said. "It's an opportunity to just get that information in front of them."
The city created a new Facebook page to do that. Goodson said this gives them the chance to be more transparent with residents.
"That's something we can take and translate into Facebook and educate our citizens on what is happening in the city and how their tax dollars are being spent," Goodson said.
People can learn about city departments and services and even see job openings. The police department is also jumping on board.
They plan on having the city post information about crimes and arrests to get the public involved.
"It's important because we know how big Facebook is," Cpl. Steve LeSueur, with the Odessa Police Department, said.
The city is also hoping to show a more positive image.
"We aren't the big bad guys. We are out there to help people and we're trying to get the public to see the good side," LeSueur said.
"Sometimes all the good news gets overshadowed by the controversy or whatever is happening in the world so this is an opportunity to get the good news out there," Goodson said.
