Coach Carthel Controversy

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - More fallout from Thursday's surprise firing of long time West Texas A&M head football coach Don Carthel.

Don Carthel along with his attorney, and former WT coach, Bill Kelly responded to the university's statements regarding the firing of WT's all-time winningest football coach.

They tell us the incident in question involved Carthel going with two football players to a Texas Rangers baseball game in late July.

Carthel says he purchased two $30 dollar tickets for the players, with the agreement to be reimbursed upon returning back to Canyon.

When approached by the WT Athletic Department about the situation, Carthel, who says he feared he might have accidentally violated an NCAA rule told Athletic Director Michael McBroom he received reimbursement before the game, and told both players to do so as well.

He admitted to this error and apologized, but pointed out that he now knows if reimbursement occurs at any point, it is not a violation and questions why McBroom approached the issue in the first place.

The rapid chain of events leading to now began yesterday at 2:30 in the afternoon, where we are told Carthel met with McBroom and university President J. Patrick O'Brien, and was ultimately terminated.

The university then addressed their side of the issue in a news conference, followed by Carthel Friday afternoon.

We have reached out to Mr. McBroom for a response to Friday's statements by Carthel and his attorney and we will have that information as soon as it becomes available.
