Canyon, TX - WT head football coach Don Carthel has been relieved of his duties with the team.

Assistant coach Mike Nesbitt will take over immediately. The news came in just before 6:00pm Thursday. The university held a press conference regarding the situation at 7:00pm.

WT learned of a NCAA violation. The university would not specify about the specific incident in violation but did tell NewsChannel 10 it was a blatant violation, and they had no other choice in their course of action.

It was very emotional at the press conference. The school believes this was a 1 time incident and hopes the incident doesn't tarnish a great coaching legacy.

Don Carthel Relieved of Duties as Buffalo Football Coach

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M head football coach Don Carthel has been relieved of his duties as football coach of the Buffaloes effective immediately.  Assistant head coach Mike Nesbitt has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

"I want to thank Don for his years of service to West Texas A&M and for building a nationally competitive football program," said WT Athletic Director Michael McBroom."

Over the past eight years, Carthel has elevated the football program to that of national prominence.  Last year, Carthel guided the Buffs to one of the best seasons in school history with a 12-3 record, a share of the Lone Star Conference championship and a berth in the school's first NCAA National Semifinal.  The 12 wins this past season matched the school-record set by Carthel in 2009.

Carthel took a program that had won just seven games combined over the previous four years and guided it to eight winning seasons, six NCAA Division II playoff appearances, five Lone Star Conference championships, two Kanza Bowl appearances and 79 victories.

He became the winningest coach in school history in 2012 as he surpassed Joe E. Kerbel in wins Sept. 15, 2012, with his 69th win at the helm of the Buffaloes in a 40-10 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.  Carthel was named Lone Star Conference Co-Coach of the Year, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Super Region Four Coach of the Year and was honored as Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame Coach of the Year for 2012.  In his eight seasons, Carthel compiled a 79-22 record.

"We realize the time of this decision is extremely unfortunate for the team as they are preparing for the upcoming season," McBroom added.  "I want to ask all of our supporters and fans continue to stand by our coaches and players."
