Snack Pak growing corn for families

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - The Snack pak 4 Kids organization is now fighting hunger in a different way.

Snack Pak 4 Kids has been fighting weekend hunger by sending kids home with shelf-stable snacks. Now they're teaming up with a local farmer to provide fresh produce to families in need.

"I guess this started long ago when I was a kid, and I saw my grandmother, my "mam'aw" feed lots of neighbors and lots of people with her garden," Dyron Howell, Snack Pak 4 Kids founder says.

The organization has partnered up with Wildorado farmer, David Cleavinger to provide something different for those in need. Snack Pak will be providing families with sweet corn grown just for them.

"The principals we've worked with during the school year, we're working with this summer that have identified 10 elementary schools, and they've contacted those families and those kids to let them know that this will be available in those school parking lots on the afternoon of August the 10th," Howell says.

But volunteers are still needed to come out and help harvest these ears of corn that are going to go towards feeding many Amarillo families. Two acres of land has more than 50,000 ears of corn that will be available to feed 4,000 families. All of which came from one bag of donated seeds.

"It's not that big a deal for me. It's two acres, and we just planted it here among the rest of the commercial corn. So that way we can share part of what we got, and help feed people," Cleavinger says.

But they can't help the community alone.

"We need all the volunteers we can get. We're going to have a fun day, a fun time to help feed the world, and feed our neighbors basically," Cleavinger says.

It won't be just about picking corn on August  10th, those involved will also be roasting corn, along with other fun activities.
