Local organization helping individuals with special needs

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Advo Companies is about to begin construction on several different projects.

They will be adding a new ADA accessible park and a gymnasium where they can train individuals for the Special Olympics.

Several new retail stores will also be added, where those with intellectual disabilities can get the skills necessary to enter the workforce.

Advo says over the past 22 years they have grown tremendously and now train, house and provide jobs to more than 100 residents.

They say these projects were much needed to keep up with the demand.

"When our individuals go to a park we want them to do everything there is. There's that sense of child in all of us; that we want to play. It's normal and it's natural. Not to mention, the benefits of balance and coordination. All of those things help us throughout our lives. That's what we want to bring to our individuals," says Carla Hughes, president, Advo Companies.

Once built, the ADA accessible park will be near S. Washington and Hillside and will be open to the entire community.

Although the land has been purchased and the designs for the park, gymnasium and retail stores are all set, Advo still needs to raise about 4.5 million dollars.

If you're interested in donating, please contact Carla Hughes at 806-342-0600.

There will be an event Thursday, July 11th at 10 am at the Advo facility at 5241 S. Washington to announce their new plans.
