Amarillo business teams up with Orange County Choppers

Posted: Updated:

AMARILLO -- Goody's World Famous Popcorn will be featured on the next season of Orange County Choppers, but their goals go beyond just one television episode.

Goody's is a small shop in Westgate Mall, but their product is now being tasted all the way in New York after they teamed up the OCC to raise $15 million.

"We're building a bike for the American Fallen Warriors Memorial Foundation," Goody's owner Dave Goodwin said.

It was Goodwin's idea to ask OCC to build an all American chopper that he would then raffle off to raise money for the AFWMF, a national organization dedicated to honoring the military heroes who have died during the Global War on Terrorism.

"We have built the 9-11 memorial in New York City, we've built the flight 93 memorial in Pennsylvania, and now the Pentagon memorial is being completed to honor the victims. Well now it's been 12 years and it's time to honor those men and women who made that ultimate sacrifice for our country," said AFWMF member Jack Barnes.

$30 million is needed to build the proposed memorial in Kansas City, and Goody's project with OCC will attempt to raise half of that.

Raffle tickets are available at the Goody's location in Amarillo and Lubbock for $25. The winner of that raffle will get a custom OCC chopper donated by OCC.

"We'd like to sell about 300,000 tickets to that motorcycle and hopefully Paul Senior will come and hopefully make an appearance here," Barnes said.

Goody's is fronting $160,000 to build a chopper that will be featured in the future memorial.  The AFWMF donated actual pieces of cinder block from the World Trade Centers that will be a part of the bike.

The whole project turned out to be a bigger deal than Goodwin expected when he called OCC on a whim, and now he's traveling the country to get sponsorship for the project.

As far as his popcorn business is concerned, the publicity it will receive this fall when the show airs is just a bonus.

"It's cool to bring a little Hollywood here to Amarillo," Goodwin said.

Goodwin says their story will be featured in the second episode of the OCC's new season on CMT this fall. But the network has not announced when exactly that will be.
