BIG SPRING - A Big Spring man will serve 40 years for a murder of another man last year.
19-year-old Chris Marquez was found guilty by a Howard County jury earlier this month on charges of murder, aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and possession of a firearm by a felon. The suspect requested that the sentence be handed down by the judge.
118th District Court Judge Timothy Yeats gave Marquez 40 years for the murder of Luis Pena, 15 years for the assault charge and 10 years for the firearm possession charge. The sentences will be served concurrently.
The homicide took place last October, just outside the VFW building on Driver Road. Another man was also injured in the shooting.
