Texas becomes one of 23 states to use electronic insurance proof

A new law in Texas is making it okay to use a cell phone in the car. But, only if it's to prove you have auto insurance.

Texas is now one of 23 states where it is legal to show proof of insurance by pulling up the policy card on your smart phone.

"There's already a lot of people doing that in vehicles that I've stopped in the past where they've presented that," said Senior State Trooper Chris Ray. "Of course that hasn't been acceptable until now," he added.

Most major car insurance companies offer apps where you can easily access your policy.

As with any application, some people like it and want to use it," said Merritt Vaughn, a State Farm Agent in Amarillo. "Some people don't want anything to change. They want their printed cards but we clearly know this is the future."

He thinks have the app as an option will be beneficial for everyone.

"Everyone that has had a paper ID card in their car, they haven't always been actually valid ID cards. This gets around all of that. Its accurate, it's timely, if they present it, everyone can be confident that it's an active valid insurance card," Vaughn said.

State Troopers still suggest carrying the paper card in your car just in case. But as of now, the electronic proof should work just fine.
