Garden program keeps students involved throughout the summer

Posted: Updated:

The garden at Carver Academy in Amarillo was vacant for over a decade. But a partnership and a grant from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service brought it back to life and now continues to educate students throughout the year.

"It's a hands on approach so students are actually engaged in the process of learning about food nutrition and how to grow the plant," said Ron French, a plant pathologist with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.

Students in second to fifth grade spent the year developing a green thumb, along with learning about science and nutrition. Environmental science teacher, Molly Williams told us the program is a great way to get kids involved in a hands on activity outside of the classroom.

"We don't have books. We just get in there and do things constantly. They get to go outside and plant in the garden," she said.

Crops like corn, tomatoes and squash were planted by students and will be harvested in the coming months.

"Obviously they are welcome to come in the summer if they want to take a look at the food production or help out as well with their parents," said French. "If they want to volunteer and help out that's great."

In the meantime, members of the Texas Tech A&M AgriLife department and members of the friends of carver academy group will look after the garden.
