Unemployment outlook for panhandle teens

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - It may be harder for teens across the panhandle to find summer jobs this year.

Many high schoolers look for part time jobs during their summer break. But a state by state analysis by the Employment Policies Institute reports that may be harder this year, as Texas sees an increase in the unemployment rate for teens. The EPI reports a nearly 22 percent teen unemployment rate, which is up from last year.

Workforce Solutions has a youth program, but they do say many jobs out there are being taken by the older job seekers.

"With the unemployment rate as high as it's been, those jobs are typically taken by the more mature workers that are basically trying to find any job to put food on the table," Marin Rivas, Workforce Solutions operations manager says.

With minimum wage increases, part-time and summer jobs for high schoolers are usually the first on the chopping block employers tell us. But, we are told there are still some options for those looking for jobs.
