Local students plant trees for Arbor Day

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Dozens of Amarillo schoolchildren got their hands dirty Friday afternoon (Apr. 26) in the name of education and community service.

Forest Hill Elementary School students worked alongside the city's Parks and Recreation Department, the Texas Forest Service, and the League of Women Voters to plant 20 new trees in their school's park.

The students were given a hands-on experience to learn about tree planting techniques and the history and meaning of Arbor Day.

The Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department plans to plant 400 new trees in Amarillo in 2013.

Amarillo has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a "Tree City" for the last 17 years.
