LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Las Cruces woman suspected of shoplifting also is facing a child abuse charge for allegedly leaving her young daughter behind in a shopping cart.

Las Cruces police say 26-year-old Jeanise P. Morales Martinez was released from the Dona Ana County Detention Center after posting $10,000 bail.

Police responded to a shoplifting report Wednesday at the Lowe's Fiesta Foods.

They say Martinez and a man allegedly walked out of the store without paying for $160 worth of groceries.

When store employees confronted the couple, they say Martinez and the man ran to a car and left the 4-year-old child behind.

Police say Martinez was arrested on a warrant from the adult probation office and issued criminal citations.

They say her daughter has been turned over to state child welfare officials.
