MIDLAND - It was scary moments for shoppers at the Midland Park Mall when a suspicious package was found.

Officers quickly swarmed the mall and people on the east side of the mall were told to evacuate.

It all started around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when mall security discovered a suspicious package.

Police were called out and soon a sea of authorities took over the east side of the mall.

An explosive ordinance disposal team was also called out to the scene to handle the package.

A robot was sent to pick up the package and an X-ray machine discovered there were no explosives inside the package.

NewsWest 9 talked to witnesses on the scene about what they saw.

"Well first it was just a random backpack just sitting on the table. We were just walking around and they told us we couldn't be in that area. We went inside Ross and they started closing the doors and everything and made us evacuate Ross. We couldn't even get what we were going to buy. We were waiting in line and they're like 'no you can't even cash out,'" Witness, Michael Aguilar, said.

We're told the east side of the mall was evacuated.

As for the rest of the mall, security only advised that managers and shop owners should close up but they weren't required to leave.
