ANDREWS COUNTY - Higher levels of radioactive waste could be coming to Andrews County if one State Senator has his way.

Kel Seliger has introduced a bill to store higher levels of radioactive waste.

That site is operated by Waste Control Specialists, which currently stores only low level radioactive waste.

The legislation prompted some heated debate at a Senate Natural Resources Committee meeting in Austin on Tuesday.

According to a National Public Radio State Impact Report, Rob Duncan, a State Senator from Lubbock, has concerns.

He's worried it diverts from the storage site's original purpose.

Duncan was also concerned about the bill limiting the amount of people entitled to contest it to only people living nearby in Texas even though thousands of New Mexican's live within 20 miles of the facility.
